Desiree retired from the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho Public Schools after 19 years of teaching. She is the survivor of the suicide of her son Ryan and since his death began using a curriculum to teach mental illness and suicide awareness to middle and high school students called Breaking the Silence NM. Although Desiree is not actively teaching any longer, the program continues to reach students across New Mexico through the Compassionate Touch Network. Her core belief about education is that early intervention and education to break down stigma can save lives. She co-facilitates Survivors of Suicide SOS) Albuquerque as well as an SOS Mothers group at the Grief Resource Center.

Desiree has written a book about her grief, and continues to write for newsletters and online publications. She is married and has a grown daughter.
