The recently opened Grief Resource Center is helping others remake their lives after loss. Its Mission Statement is incredibly simple: “Lighting the pathways to healing through understanding, encouragement and hope.” But the delivery of its Mission is as complex and diverse as the population it serves.

Located in Albuquerque in the former fleet storage area of FRENCH Funerals & Cremations on University, just north of Lomas, the Grief Resource Center hopes to be the epicenter of renewal from grief, whether it be from divorce, disease, death – or the many other types of loss.

Grief centers are not a new concept. A simple internet search will bring up centers in Wisconsin, Illinois, California, and Florida to name a few. Even in New Mexico, the Children’s Grief Center has been in operation since 2001 and doing amazing work under the leadership of Jade Richardson Bock. But there has never been one centralized location in New Mexico specifically designed to connect and counsel adult grief sufferers.

Until now.

Thanks to the generosity of FRENCH Funerals& Cremations, the start of this non-profit 501(c)3 has been fully underwritten through 2017. Linda Phelps, Ph.D. is the Executive Director and her vision is to collaborate with other organizations and professionals to ensure the availability of a wide range of grief resources without duplicating services. The GRC hopes to bring together the diverse support that is available in NM, but sometimes not known or readily accessible, and to provide services when needs are unmet.

The GRC is already home to a number of support groups and has held many workshops. The overwhelming response to the Grief and the Holidays Workshop Series shows that our community longs to express grief, but to address it in positive and conversational ways, and in the presence of others who understand.
